How to restore a course in Moodle

A course backup can be restored into a new course or into an already existing course. From Moodle 2.3 onwards all 1.9 course backup files without user data can be converted directly from the course restore area.Restore a course by following the steps below.

From the Administration block, expand Course administration, and then click "Restore."


Select which file to Restore.  Click the "Restore" link.

Backup area

1. Choose a file that has been saved in an external repository.

2. Choose the existing backup file for this course. (Click here to learn how to backup a course.)

3. Choose a file from another course that was previously backed up  in the past.


Review backup settings and then scroll down and click "Confirm."

Select the restore destination in one of three ways:


Option A: Restore as a new course, choose category where the new course will be located, then select "Continue."

Option B: Restore in this course, choose how to restore, then click "Continue."

This course

To restore a back up into the course that is currently selected. The following options are available:

1. Merge the backup course into this course will add the content of the backup file and add into the current course.

2. Delete the contents of this course and then restore will delete the content in the current course and replace it with the features inside the backup course.


Option C: Restore into an existing course, select where to restore the course, then click "Continue."

Existing course

To restore a backup into a different course that already exists in the system. This option has two alternatives:

1. Merge the backup course into this course will add the content of the file and add into the current course.

2. Delete the the contents of this course and then restore will delete the content in the current course and replace it with the features inside the back up course.


Determine Restore settings, then scroll down and click "Next."

Determine which "Course settings" to include in the restore, then scroll down and select "Next."

In this area select which Topics, Activities and Resources to restore.


Review Restore settings chosen, then scroll down and select "Perform restore."

Click "Continue" to access the restored course.

Complete restore

 Depending on the size of the course it may take a few seconds.
